Thankful for Thanksgiving

By Kate McCullom

Growing up, Thanksgiving was always one of my favorite holidays because of all the delicious food I got to enjoy. A day dedicated just to eating (and being thankful of course)! I have vivid memories of waiting in the kitchen as my mom prepared our Thanksgiving feast, my mouth-watering counting down the minutes until we finally sat down for our delicious family meal. As I grew older, I made more attempts to help my mother with the cooking, but that also meant I could sneak a little taste here and there throughout the cooking process.

One of my favorite Thanksgiving foods is my mom’s homemade mac and cheese. As a mac and cheese lover, of course I am always excited to enjoy the cheesy dish, but there is something so special about the mac and cheese we make on Thanksgiving. My twin sister and I are usually in charge of making it. While my sister stirs the milk and butter blend on the stove top, I cut up and add all the different cheeses my mom bought. Gouda, cheddar, mozzarella, etc (name all please)., all go in the pot until we get a thick cheesy blend.

Another favorite of mine is stuffing. I love love love stuffing. A special treat we only seem to enjoy on Thanksgiving, it reminds me of the comfort and joy of being together as a family on the holiday. My family always puts the stuffing in the oven to make it nice and crispy on the outside, but soft in the middle.

And I can’t forget about the turkey! Thanksgiving turkey is unlike no other. The smell of it cooking in the oven always takes over the whole kitchen, making my mouth water. I love drenching my turkey in gravy and get not only seconds, but thirds!

Thanksgiving is a day of delicious foods, and I am very thankful to get to eat and enjoy them with my family every year!
