Kids cooking tips
Please follow these tips to ensure your kitchen is a safe and fun space to learn and laugh.
- Always cook with an adult present.
- Wash hands thoroughly—at least 20 seconds with warm soapy water.
- Wear close-toed shoes.
- If you have long hair, tie it back to prevent it from falling into food or getting caught on anything.
Wash produce—fruits and vegetables—before using. - Avoid cross contamination—use separate cutting boards and tools when preparing raw meats and veggies.
- Always turn pot handles in and away from the edge of the stove to keep hot stuff from spilling.
- Always use potholders when moving hot items to or from the stove or oven.
- Cook boiling liquids on the back burners, away from curious hands.
- Keep fingers and hands out of the mixing bowl when using an electric mixer or immersion blender. Stop the mixer before scraping the sides down.
- A step stool provides a level lift for the perfect position at the counter. It also creates a kid-friendly dedicated space.
- Keep the countertop clean and free of knives, eggs, peelers, and any potentially harmful kitchen utensils.
- Clean spills and messes as you go to prevent slips and falls.
- Every kitchen should have a fire extinguisher.
- Check that the oven, stove, and other cooking appliances are turned off before you leave the kitchen.
