Kids cooking tips

Please follow these tips to ensure your kitchen is a safe and fun space to learn and laugh.

  1. Always cook with an adult present.
  2. Wash hands thoroughly—at least 20 seconds with warm soapy water.
  3. Wear close-toed shoes.
  4. If you have long hair, tie it back to prevent it from falling into food or getting caught on anything.
    Wash produce—fruits and vegetables—before using.
  5. Avoid cross contamination—use separate cutting boards and tools when preparing raw meats and veggies.
  6. Always turn pot handles in and away from the edge of the stove to keep hot stuff from spilling.
  7. Always use potholders when moving hot items to or from the stove or oven.
  8. Cook boiling liquids on the back burners, away from curious hands.
  9. Keep fingers and hands out of the mixing bowl when using an electric mixer or immersion blender. Stop the mixer before scraping the sides down.
  10. A step stool provides a level lift for the perfect position at the counter. It also creates a kid-friendly dedicated space.
  11. Keep the countertop clean and free of knives, eggs, peelers, and any potentially harmful kitchen utensils.
  12. Clean spills and messes as you go to prevent slips and falls.
  13. Every kitchen should have a fire extinguisher.
  14. Check that the oven, stove, and other cooking appliances are turned off before you leave the kitchen.
