Discussing basic baking terms is easy when you have a task to do and the utensils are at hand. Here are some definitions.
Batch. Amount to be made from one recipe.
Batter. A mixture of dry and liquid ingredients, often including eggs, flour, and water. Batter has a much thinner consistency than dough.
Beat. To mix rapidly to combine ingredients and incorporate air into the mixture.
Blend. To mix two ingredients together until they merge.
Cool. To allow the temperature of an item to decrease.
Cream. To soften butter or shortening and blend with another ingredient, usually sugar.
Dough. A mixture of flour and a liquid. Dough is thick enough to be kneaded and rolled, and is used for bread and pastries.
Drizzle. To pour a liquid over food in a very thin stream or droplets. Icing can be drizzled.
Knead. To mix by hand by pressing, folding, and pulling. Bread dough is kneaded.
Sprinkle. To lightly dust something—such as sugar, chopped nuts, or cinnamon—over a food.
Stir. To mix by moving a spoon or other kitchen utensil in a circular motion.
Whip. To rapidly beat liquid ingredients with a whisk or electric mixer to increase volume and make the mixture light and fluffy by adding air.
Whisk. Kitchen tool used to blend, beat, and incorporate air into a mixture.
